NEWS UPDATE JUNE 2009
Welcome to our new members &
Well done to all members who took part in the 2009 Association of Land Rover Clubs (ALRC) National Rally (- which has generally been accepted as one of the best for years- partly due to the weather and partly the close proximity of the camping area to the competition sites and the beer tent etc)
We had the best turn out yet; including the camping area, which we out grew!
Again Very Well done to those who took part in Competitions and the winners of awards especially Clive Graves with 2nd Overall in the Comp Safari, 1ST O/A Warren Roper well done to him also who usually enters as Anglian, although this year entered as P& D, (Peak & Dukeries LRC) may be because of the lack of suitable team of three, to win the team award which Anglian “A “team came 2nd after Essex LRC at last years National Comp Safari (after Warrens Car broke its fuel pump bracket ),Teamed with Mark Summerbee who could not do this years event,
We had various successes in the Trials, and two of our number got concourse trophies -Dave Try & Allan Phillips -who were on call as fire & first aid cover type duties,
Thank you to all our members who helped the Anglian Land Rover Club’s Run Children’s Bike Trial (with 60 entrants no mean feat) special thanks to Sue Flanders who did all the paperwork work load, which when entries on the day was accepted increased the work, and also unlike the other events was not computerised,
NATIONAL RESULTS are attached to this email, any requests for a paper copy please ask,
OBITUARIES: - Alistair Waldock who lost a long running battle with cancer on June 5th 2009, many of you will remember him as one of the true Gentlemen of Land Rover Trials and a great friend to Colin Cowley who also died a few years ago, Ali as he was known, first came to a Trial in about 1982 at Dundridge Manor with his Wife Maureen, they brought along an Caravan towed by a Range Rover with a Diesel conversion done by himself this was a Perkins 4203 as fitted to various tractors and combined harvesters, other diesel conversions he had undertaken includes bigger Perkins & Ford York lumps, We think that these Range Rovers are long since gone or dumped on a farm somewhere ,although rumour has it that the caravan, an Sprite super is still about ! (It’s like our clubs safari control caravan)
One of Ali’s other Conversions, was his power handlebars kit which consisted only of a very large diameter Steering wheel which looked like it had been “borrowed” from his brother’s (Trevor) Dustcart!
Ali was most famous for his work on Automatic Gearboxes and Auto conversions, he did most of this in his spare time while working at Burtons Biscuits (famous for their wagon wheels), he helped Ian Ashcroft in his early days, many members are still very successfully using Ali & Ian developed Auto’s or conversions, many of these boxes are limited on their rated horse power capacity and have coped remarkably well with vastly over powered engines. Ali & His Brother helped Anglian R.O.C. Run the 1983 ARC National Rally at Double Arches Quarry, Leighton Buzzard, when it Rained virtually all weekend! They were Scrutineering and doing other duties - Ali will be remembered and sorely missed
